Maison » Landes Sheep

The stoic ewe & her bleating charge are kept in flock formation by the border collie, & watched over by a shepherd on stilts. According to Graham Robb’s thoroughly riveting “Discovery of France,” the shepherds of the marshy Landes spent whole days on stilts, using a stick to form a tripod when they wanted to rest. Perched ten feet in the air, they knitted woolen garments & scanned the horizon for stray sheep. They could cover up to seventy-five miles a day at 8 miles an hour, often outpacing horses.
